Quantitative Research Article Critique: Autism
Researchers in the past decade have been interested in understanding autism in details, which has necessitated for various quantitative studies to be conducted. Similarly, MacFarlane et al. (2017) conducted quantitative research on autism. They primarily aimed at evaluating disfluency or language impairment among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism is a condition, which is characterized by impairment in communication and social interaction (Stephens et al., 2018). Additionally, children with this condition tend to portray repetitive or restricted patterns of behaviour. While this article has addressed various concepts, this paper will analyze participant sampling, questionnaires/tools, ethics, analysis of findings, limitations, discussion section, and summary of the study. Participant Sampling
The researchers sampled 115 children from Portland to take part in the study. The participants were aged between 4 and 8 years. Fifty-one children who were struggling with autism spectrum disorder were involved in the study. Forty-five were male children, while six were female.
Questionnaires/Tools
The researchers used the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence assessment tools to evaluate the level of participants’ IQ during the study. Analysis of Findings
The researchers conducted inferential analyses. The analysis aimed to detect differences among the group members. Limitations
The study had two major limitations. First, the researchers completed a schema for disfluency coding before any inferential analyses. This action makes the results of the study less reliable. They were expected to complete a 70-item questionnaire to evaluate the communication abilities of their children while in natural settings. Discussion
Speech disfluencies were categorized using a simple schema. Also, the researchers used schema for coding disfluency type among children with speech deficiency. It was used to measure language deficiency and typical development among children with autism. The results indicate that content mazes were preferred over fillers by the ASD group.
