The Impact of Nursing Informatics on Patient Outcomes and Patient Care Efficiencies

Introduction

There are increasing cases of use of technology in the health setting to improve the performance of healthcare providers and in turn improving patient outcomes. The process is as well expected to improve the safety of care of patients as it allows for the advancement of the quality of care for patients as depicted by Harerimana, Forchuk, and O’Regan (2019). With the rise in the use of technology in healthcare, there is a need for healthcare providers to interact and team up with each other. The use of technology is influenced by the skills of nurses including the nurse informaticists. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the role of nursing informaticists in the improvement of patient outcomes and the enhancement of the efficiency of care.

Project being proposed

The proposed project is the installation of a patient monitoring system in the unit of the healthcare facility that deals with COVID-19 infections. Morilla et al. (2017) opine that the process of monitoring patients is instrumental in ensuring that the needs of patients are handed in as soon as they are identified. The use of a patient monitoring system will be critical in the monitoring of the health of a patient to progressively help the patient when the need arises.

The use of a patient monitoring system at the moment is based on the assessment of the flow of information in the different units of the healthcare facility. The process is expected to help in the determination of the issues that are carried out to handle the issues of patients care (Naik et al, 2020). The monitoring process will help in the determination of the best healthcare services for the patients. This is expected to help in the improvement of the quality of health of patients.

The intention of using the system in the COVID-19 unit of the healthcare facility is to help in tracking the patients from the time they are admitted to the time that they are declared negative of COVID-19 infection. This is an important step as well in that the system will ensure that there will be a faster process of tracking of patients and that the family members and the community can learn of the status of their kin faster as alluded to by Taiwo and Ezugwu (2020).

Stakeholders impacted by this project

The project will impact different stakeholders one of whom is COVID-19 patients. Patients who are suffering from COVID-19 are faced with an extensive issue of care that could influence the standard of living of patients. The COVID-19 patients are expected to learn of their status every time and the kind of medication used. The use of a patient monitoring system will be vital for patients suffering from COVID-19 because they can as well get regular updates (Li et al., 2021).

The other stakeholders who are affected by the implementation of this project are the nurses and doctors. Nurses and doctors will be able to handle the issue of concern since it ensures that one can eliminate any risks of poor patient care. The ease in the decision-making process as well is expected to be implemented by putting in place better healthcare services. The other stakeholders are family members. The family members will use the system to access the information of their kin.

Patient outcome(s) or patient-care efficiencies this project is aimed at improving

The outcome that is aimed at being improved is the process of access to information among patients with COVID-19. The process of monitoring patients who are suffering from COVID-19 is of importance and that patients are always expected to get information or updates on their health. The system as well will help in the warning of the healthcare providers who are handling the patients on the medication to be provided for the patient as adjured by Gordon et al. (2020).

The efficiencies that are to be put in place are expected to allow for the improvement of patient care services. There is a need we ensuring that there is a need for learning of ways that could be put in place for better healthcare services. The ease in the sharing of information among patients and healthcare providers can be attained if there is the use of technology.

The technology will as well allow for the patients to be able to get to ask a question to the healthcare providers and get responses faster. This is because the system will be focused on a specific unit of patients in the healthcare facility. The need for the determination of the process of communication is supposed to be in such a way that the healthcare providers can learn how to eliminate any risks of the poor decision-making process.

Technologies required to implement this project and explain why

The implementation of the patient monitoring system will be possible with the use of various technologies. The electronic healthcare records will be connected with the system. This will be the sole source of patient information and hence the information of patients can easily be important when diagnosed with COVID-19. The use of EHR will allow for the identification of the means of change that are to be used in handling the aspect of care for patients.

The other system that will be used will be a smartphone for the patients to use in the process of logging in to the platform or the system. The patient’s capability to access the necessary information will be influenced by the capability of an individual to ensure that they avoid any issue of sharing of the information wrongly. The process of access to information will be made easier with the implementation of a platform or application that is used in seeking and accessing information.

The other thing is that there is a need for ensuring that the patient information can be accessed by persons who are authorized only. In the healthcare facility, there are healthcare providers who are expected to have the necessary information on the steps that are taken for handling the issues of poor patient care. The other thing that is taken into account is that one is supposed to be informed of the necessary healthcare services.

There will be a need for the creation of a website in the healthcare facility that will be used in the process of accessing information. The issues that could be faced are supposed to be handled by putting in place the standard of care that will allow for the patients to learn of a better way to handle the patient care services. The use of a website will allow for easier communication between the patient or the family members and the healthcare providers.

The project team (by roles) and explain how one would incorporate the nurse informatics in the project team

The project team will be led by a nurse informaticist. The team leader is supposed to have the understanding and the experience that is necessary for the project to be a success. The nurse informaticist will only help in guiding the other members but will as well ensure that there is the support of members who are expected to have an informed process of decision making. The issues that could be faced are supposed to be learned by the use of a clear process of change.

The other team members are nurse leaders and the nurses in the emergency room. The nurses in the emergency team are supposed to be up to the task to help in responding to the needs of patients since they are always faced with issues of concern on the access and sharing of patient information. The emergency team will help in the process of recording the patient information and communicating with the family members if need be.

The other persons who should be part of the team are community leaders. It is important that in the community there is an improvement of the interaction that could be there between the team members and the community as posited by Annis et al. (2020). This can be attained if the community leader is part of the team. The community leader will as well represent the community members and ask a question on behalf of the members of the community.

Conclusion

The process of change in healthcare is inevitable and the changes that are occurring are expected to help in the improvement of the quality of health of patients. One of the changes that have been occurring over the past decade in healthcare is the use of technology. The increasing use of technology allows for the identification of the patients faster and ensure that patient outcome is improved. The proposed change in the health setting, in this case, is the use of a patient monitoring system in the COVID-19 unit.

Assignment: The Impact of Nursing Informatics on Patient Outcomes and Patient Care Efficiencies

In the Discussion for this module, you considered the interaction of nurse informaticists with other specialists to ensure successful care. How is that success determined?

Patient outcomes and the fulfillment of care goals is one of the major ways that healthcare success is measured. Measuring patient outcomes results in the generation of data that can be used to improve results. Nursing informatics can have a significant part in this process and can help to improve outcomes by improving processes, identifying at-risk patients, and enhancing efficiency.

To Prepare:

  • Review the concepts of technology application as presented in the Resources.
  • Reflect on how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence may help fortify nursing informatics as a specialty by leading to increased impact on patient outcomes or patient care efficiencies.
