New Thoughts and Ideas on How Nursing Curriculum Has Changed Over the Course
Nurses have been recommended for greater responsibilities and higher education, a course that has continuously been impended by barriers of class and gender, and the health sector’s short-term economic demands. However, through a seamless progression in academics to higher education, colleges and universities that train nurses are now partnering to achieve specific goals through higher education. The skills and knowledge that are alternately emphasized are leadership, critical thinking, teamwork, systems analysis, population health, care management and inquiry. The curriculum acknowledges these skills and knowledge as essential for the patient’s experience and involves students through case studies and active listening where learners assume different roles and perspectives.Determine effective strategies for curriculum change.
How Individual Insights Will Affect The Author’s Role As A Faculty Member In The Future
Ethics is an important part of nursing practice since nursing is all about preparing future nurses to care for patients. Currently, the curriculum is not strong enough in promoting and modeling positive ethical and moral decision making. This explains why it is necessary for the curriculum to instill this content in the entire nursing curriculum. For instance, before any form of direct care is provided by a nursing student in the clinical setting, one should be able to discuss ethical and moral principles and the expectations of professional practice. Besides, as the most frontline and direct caregivers, nurses closely interact with patients as compared to other healthcare professionals. Therefore, they need a deeper and broader understanding of the ethical aspects that surround the nurse-patient relationship and inter-professional relationships. Therefore, ethics should be introduced early in the curriculum and be incorporated into other courses in the program. Contents in ethics should also be taught at the master’s and doctoral levels to build on the understanding, knowledge and application of learners as they progress from novice-expert level. Therefore, as a faculty member in the future, the author will ensure that ethics is introduced to learners at the beginning of the course.Determine effective strategies for curriculum change.
How Projected Changes in Healthcare and Society Might Affect Changes In Nursing Curriculum In The Future
As a continuously evolving profession to meet societal changes and expectations, the nursing curriculum is also expected to evolve to achieve successful outcomes. Presently, most students in the nursing profession as well as the entire society are dealing with overload of information, an issue that concerns both faculty and students. This explains why developing new sets of skills through new teaching methods will be a priority for the nursing curriculum in the future. These changes will continue to influence the adoption of concept-based curriculums to address most of the gaps that will be brought by the changes in society and healthcare. Concept-based curriculum, models and teaching methods inspire deep thinking whereby, learners adopt ideas and are able to organize information into different sets before applying it in actual practice. This totally differs with traditional curriculum models whereby, nursing students learn facts and work how to apply them in clinical settings. Besides, with concept-based curriculums, nursing students will only be required to build on the knowledge gained previously and work towards integrating it with information from other disciplines. The objective will be to allow nursing students to link classroom concepts in solving problems by mastering basic skills. Therefore, more time will be spent in virtual practice and clinical simulation.Determine effective strategies for curriculum change.
