Diabetes

Diabetes is usually classified as gestational, type 2 and type 1 diabetes.   The pathophysiology of these major types of diabetes varies.  According to Gray et al (2018), type1 diabetes, historically known as juvenile diabetes is a lifetime autoimmune illness distinguished by suppression or destruction of pancreatic beta cells produces insulin, resulting to production of little or no insulin. Even though there is an acknowledged hereditary, tendency, type1 diabetes can’t be connected with any recognizable causes, it isunpreventable and presently there is no   cure for the condition.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is unable to effectively utilize insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body makes insufficient insulin or the body fails to effectively utilizes the insulin produced. Gray et al (2018) assert thatindividuals with type 2 diabetes are resistant to insulin. It is not known why some individuals become insulin resistance, but lifestylefactors, includinginactivity excess weight may be contributing factors.

Gestational diabetes only occurs during pregnancy. Like type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes leads to high blood glucose and can affect the health of both the mother and the baby.  When one is pregnant, the placenta produces hormones that may result to a backlog of glucose in the blood. The pancreas can produce sufficient insulin to breakdown the glucose, but if it doesn’t, the levels of blood sugar goes up and can lead to gestational diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a dreadful illness and can immensely reduce a patient’s quality of life, make one vulnerable to several grave illnesses and cause premature death. There are both long term and short term complications of type 2diabetes.Short-term impact of type 2 diabetes on patients include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) hyperglycemia. (high blood glucose) along with diabetic ketoacidosis. Long term impacts oftype 2 diabetes on the patient include diabetic retinopathy macrovascular problems and nephropathy (Cabo&Jasinska, 2016).

High blood glucose over a long duration has numerous detrimental health outcomes, thus the longer an individual is diabetic, the poorer the health outcomes.Cabo and Jasinska (2016) argue that diabetes causes destruction of the body’s large and small blood vessels, impairs circulation and delivery of nutrients and oxygen to tissues. Type 2 diabetes also leads to nerve damageand damage to blood vessels and nerves is the main factor that causes long-term complications of the condition.
