Hello! My name is xxx, and I am currently a med-surg nurse in Charleston, South Carolina. I was in the Navy for ten years as a submariner and decided to become a nurse to improve the healthcare system for our veterans. I have only been a nurse for less than two years so I still have a lot to learn from my peers and supervisors. Discussion: Networking Opportunities I hope to learn how to change and improve the leadership and management skills I have attained in the military and focus my attention on our veterans.
After graduating from high school, I decided to enlist in the United States Navy to provide service to the country that gave my family the opportunity to live a better life. As I started my naval career, many negative presses were released about how poor the veteran healthcare system was treating our veterans. I strongly believed that it was unacceptable for any veteran to be mistreated or undertreated and I was worried about how my military family and I would be treated once we finished our services. At the end of my naval career, I decided to change my studies from electrical engineering to nursing in order to enter the healthcare force from the best position possible to meet and treat my fellow veterans.
My mission is to be someone who will always make social changes within the healthcare system and advocate for all veterans and healthcare forces beyond my boundaries (Walden University, n.d.). I believe that Walden University’s and the MSN program’s mission, vision, and goals will guide me in providing the highest quality, integrity, and excellence for our veterans and healthcare forces (Walden University, n.d.).
As a nurse with less than two years of experience, I knew that I had to seek guidance from my peers and leaders. I began by meeting with our nurse educators, nurse managers, chief nurses, and our associate deputy of nursing to learn how to make changes within the healthcare system. After many meetings and reading several recommended books, I realized that our nursing and social culture had to change before I can make an impact on our veterans’ healthcare system. Discussion: Networking Opportunities After reading the university’s and the program’s mission, vision, goals, and outcome statements, I believe that if I integrate them to my beliefs, I will be able to make positive changes within our veteran healthcare system. I hope to “exhibit ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories/ethical principles…” because if I don’t change myself, I will not be able to change the system (Walden University, n.d.). I look forward to learning a lot from all the more senior nurses with many years of experience in this class on how to make a difference in the healthcare system. My name is Shiressa and I have been working in the nursing field for over ten years. I am currently pursuing my Masters degree to become a psychiatric NP and to serve in the United States Air Force Reserves. I chose this career three years ago while working on the home care department of the hospital that I currently work for. Majority of my home visits were in the inner city of community. I noticed that many of the patients were non-compliant with their psychiatric medication, in denial of their diagnosis, or embarrassed about seeking help. Most patients felt comfortable speaking with me and would confide in me about various symptoms that they were experiencing. They described symptoms of hallucinations, past suicide attempts, increased drug and alcohol use; and presented with disorganized thoughts. As a nurse, I would educate my patients on how to seek help; and made attempts to advocate for referrals to psychiatric care. The majority of these patients became defensive and declined services. A very small amount embraced and accepted the help. This made me determined to further my education to spread awareness within these communities. It is my plan to provide supportive , caring, and compassionate quality care to this population. While expressing to them that they are not alone. I recently discovered that I still have an opportunity to serve my country as a Psychiatric NP in the United States Air Force. I have always had a passion and desire to serve my country. It will truly be an outstanding honor to treat and support airmen who suffer from mental illnesses, or to be supportive during their enlistment while away from their families Discussion: Networking Opportunities.
The mission of Walden University is to support all MSN students and assist us in being successful in our Advanced Practice role ( Vision, Mission, and Goals, 2021). To provide each of us with the necessary tools to become exemplary leaders in our educational setting as well as organizational settings.(Vision, Mission, and Goals, 2021). Their mission is to be a guide throughout this journey and transition from novice to expert advanced practice nurse ( Laureate education, 2018). Supporting us to continue to collaborate with current leaders; and build supportive mentoring relationships by networking ( Laureate education, 2018). The faculty at Walden University are committed to helping MSN students to reach their highest academic and professional potential to become a scholar- practitioner ( Subocz, 2021). They are dedicated in providing MSN students with the resources needed to become social change agents(Laureate Education, 2018).
My career and academic goals are consistent with Walden University’s program outcomes, to continue to build upon my current knowledge with advanced critical thinking skills and evidenced based theories. These two concepts are most important in the success of my career as a civilian Psychiatric NP and a United States Air Force Psychiatric NP. I am committed to this journey and the continuation of lifetime learning of advanced evidenced based care in my field. I am also dedicated to promoting social change in a diverse community from an educational and professional standpoint by applying theories learned throughout this program.

This week you begin to lay the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision, which includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone. Discussion: Networking Opportunities
Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other members of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This week’s Discussion asks you to think about how the Walden mission and vision and the College of Nursing mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams that can help you along the way, as you begin to design the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.
To Prepare:
Post a brief post introducing yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation for how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN program outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
Support main post with 3 of more current, credible sources and cite source within content of posting and on a reference list in proper APA.
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days, by suggesting additional individuals and/or teams with whom to collaborate or by offering additional networking strategies.
Introduction:
My name is Melissa Marlowe. Discussion: Networking Opportunities I have been a nurse for 14 years. I currently work in the float-pool of my hospital. I am cross-trained in ICU and the ER. I began my career in healthcare right out of high school. I started as a Certified Nurses Assistant in long-term care before taking a position at my current hospital as a nurse tech on Med/Surg. I wasn’t satisfied in that role because I wanted to learn more and do more for my patients. I became an LPN and accepted a position on the Renal/Urology unit, but I did not want to stop there. After 2 years I obtained my Associates Degree in Nursing and accepted an RN position on the Critical Care Unit and eventually cross-trained to work in the Emergency Department, before accepting my current position as a Float Pool RN. I obtained my BSN degree during that time and now I am working on my goal of becoming an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
My Mission, Vision, and Goals:
My personal professional mission and vision is to improve the health and well-being of my patients and community through education and providing high-quality evidenced-based care, while respecting the needs, values, and beliefs of all the patients I care for. Keeping this in mind, the focus throughout my career will be to ensure that my patients receive relevant and accurate health education they need to better manage their own health concerns and strive to provide them with the necessary resources to be successful in managing their health conditions. I will continue to seek out new information and research to help me better serve my patients and my community and to always advocate for my patients health and well-being.
Walden University Mission, Vision, and Goals:
Walden’s vision is to provide a learning environment where “the knowledge obtained can be applied by its graduates” to find solutions to “societal challenges” (Vision, Mission, and Goals, n.d.). This relates to my mission of learning and passing on that education to my patients to help advance the health and well-being of my community.
Walden’s mission of “providing professional’s with opportunities to transform into scholar-practitioners to effect positive change” (Vision, Mission, and Goals, n.d.), aligns with my goals of health promotion within my community and the continued learning by seeking out new information relevant to the health concerns of my patients and community members.
Walden’s goal of providing education that “results in professional excellence and produce graduates that are scholarly, reflective practitioners” and agents of change (Vision, Mission, and Goals, n.d.) aligns with my desire to provide excellent evidenced-based care to my patients and community through continued education and application of evidenced based research in the nursing field Discussion: Networking Opportunities.
The scholar-practitioner model is the use of practical knowledge and scholarly research as a basis of planning and problem solving, and the application of theory and practice to problem solving in the workplace (Scholar-Practitioner Model, 2011). Walden University School of Nursing utilizes this model in the education of advanced nurse practitioners. The Mission and Vision of the School of Nursing is to transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care across the lifespan to meet the needs of the community (School of Nursing Mission and Vision,n.d.). This is accomplished by providing rigorous and culturally relevant education based on the scholar-practitioner model (School of Nursing Mission and Vision, n.d.). I believe this aligns with my desire to effect change in my community through the acquisition of knowledge and application of evidence-based practice and to provide the best care possible to those that I serve.

Response
Hello xxx! I think it is very important for all patients to receive relevant and accurate health education in order for them to self-manage their health because I believe the patients should be the experts of their own health. I don’t know if it’s just me, but when my patients tell me they know exactly what is going on and know how each of their medication looks like, I get surprised because majority of my patients don’t understand their own bodies and health. I also think it is important for us, as nurses, to provide the resources the patients need in order to learn and improve their own health. As we all learned from nursing school, discharge planning occurs during admission, so we should plan to provide all the resources they need in order to succeed in recovery.
I also believe that Walden University’s vision of creating graduates who will create “…immediate solutions of critical societal challenges…” aligns with many of our classmates (Walden University, 2021, Vision, Mission, and Goals section, para. 1). After reading many discussion posts, I see that many of us want to make a huge impact in different aspects of healthcare, no matter what titles we achieve. I hope we never lose our sight on our goals to become “…agents of positive social change” (Walden University, 2021, Vision, Mission, and Goals section, para 3). As stated in Walden University’s MSN learning outcomes (2021), I hope that we all “…promote quality improvement of patient-centered care in accordance with professional practice standards that transform outcomes for diverse populations” (Walden University, 2021, Master of Science in Nursing, MSN Learning Outcomes). sample discussion 2
My name is xxx, I have been a nurse for almost 10 years this coming August. I have been passionate with pediatric population, and I have worked with medically fragile children for 5 years, and later transitioned to geriatric where I have worked as a case manager/ field nurse for a home health agency for close to 5 years now. I have been planning to go back to school to further my education, but I was totally torn in between doing pediatric nurse practitioner or mental health. It took me a while to completely settle for mental health specialty.
During my practice with geriatric population, I discovered most patient have mental health related issue which have never been addressed especially those of African descent. Having been born in African, I remember seeing so many people in the streets naked/ half naked, some collecting garbage and carrying on their backs, others screaming and yelling with no one to pay attention to their agony. I also remember my close relative, a very young man who died in the streets because he had mental issue that was perceived as “demon possessed or bewitched” Discussion: Networking Opportunities.
In most African cultures, mental illness is not well understood or rather people do not really perceive it as health problem but rather as “evil spirit possession or witchcraft’. Reflecting on all these, I concluded that my goal is to purse a degree in Psychiatric mental health with a mission and vision to educate my community and people of my culture the reality of mental issues, help bring understanding of diversity and cultural barriers and encourage them to embrace mental health wellness check, diagnoses, treatment, and necessary therapies.
Walden’s vison in the 21st century, is where knowledge we achieve can be utilized to bring “solutions to societal challenges resulting in greater global good” (Mission, vision, and Goal, n.d). This aligns well with my vision of obtaining that knowledge and utilizing it in educating my patient/community to help promote good health hence contributing to their well-being.
Walden mission of “providing professionals with opportunity to transform into scholar- practitioners so as to bring positive social change” (Mission, Vision, Goals, n.d). This relates to my mission of ensuring proper understanding of mental health challenges to help bring change in my community through advocating for change and eradicating backward cultural beliefs.
Walden’s goal of “producing professional who are intellectual, reflective and agent who are able to bring about social change” (Mission, vision, goals, n.d). This resonates well with my goal and desire to utilize evidence-based knowledge to provide excellent, quality care to my community, with integrity while maintaining their dignity.
Discussion: Networking Opportunities Walden’s outcome, and MSN program learning outcome” where graduates use knowledge to positively impact their profession, community and society” (Walden university, n.d). I will strive to utilize critical thinking skills, in problem solving to achieved better patient outcome and overall well-being of my patient/my community.
Networking is very essential for any profession, it helps people exchange/share knowledge/ experiences, help them learn from each other (Wofford, 2018). I have several friends who are PMHNP-BC running their own clinics. One of my best friends has a clinic, I plan to shadow her whenever I am free. I am also a member of several Facebook groups where I follow closely the conversations and I am slowly learning the challenges out there in the real world.
