The theoretical foundations of qualitative and quantitative methods are very different, but many researchers believe both methods should be used in the research study to increase validity and reliability. A research design is a plan that specifies the procedures and methods for conducting a research study. Quantitative research is utilized in quantifying the research problem by generating numerical data. Quantitative research quantifies behaviors, opinions, attitudes, and other defined variables, to generalize findings from a larger population sample. On the other hand, qualitative research is exploratory and it is utilized in gaining understanding regarding opinions and insights to the research problem(Tariq & Woodman, 2015). Mixed research integrates both qualitative and quantitative research methods during data collection and analysis.Discussion Question.

There are various advantages of using mixed methods. The mixed-methods technique collects rich and more comprehensive data when compared to a single approach. Therefore, there is an availability of more data to develop a hypothesis and make final conclusions. Secondly, the method provides methodological flexibility and can be adapted to numerous research designs like randomized trials and observational studies to elucidate more information (Doorenbos, 2014). In addition, a mixed-research method provides a broader perspective because it utilizes the strengths of both methodologies to a broader perspective on the topic being investigated. Finally, integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods reduces bias due to the triangulation of data and this increases the reliability of the findings(Tariq & Woodman, 2015). However, the mixed research method has its own disadvantages. First, when qualitative data is quantified, the data loses its depth and flexibility because qualitative research is multidimensional whereas quantitative research is one-dimensional (Tariq& Woodman, 2015). Moreover, the mixed research method is very time-consuming and costly and it also requires competence and experience and many researchers might not be experienced and competent in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Lastly, interpretation and analysis findings from a mixed research method is complex and this may affect the findings (Doorenbos, 2014). This may reduce the validity and reliability of the findings, making it difficult to apply the findings in clinical practice.Discussion Question.
