There are many advantages to having electronic health records in today’s healthcare environment. Some of these advantages include: accessibility, reduction of waste, enhanced surveillance and monitoring of disease conditions, reduction in use of care, increased delivery of guidelines-based cares, and reduction of medication errors. One issue related to the implementation of electronic health records is the technical ability. One example of these issues is “ Connecting to the system and internet can be more difficult for a system that is located in a rural setting over an urban region”(Office Practicum, 2016). Not all medical facilities are located in ideal areas for utilizing the Internet, additionally it maybe difficult for the patients in this region to use the Internet as well. One solution for this issue is to continue to increase infrastructure for the Internet in these areas. Another solution is to provide education and training for these more rural areas so that they can become more familiar with electronic health records. (McGonigle & Mastrain, 2018) Another issue related to the implementation of electronic health records is the cost of use. The implementation and use of this new technology can be more expensive that previous methods. A solution for this issue is to “engage a thorough and long-term cost-benefit analysis or ROI forecast which links desirable outcomes to the EHR implementation and utilization of a new EHR system”(Green, 2018). An additional solution would be if the government provided some sort of tax credit for smaller practices or facilities that may have smaller budgets. Therefore these smaller practices or facilities would have more on an incentive to implement electronic health records, which can benefits patients. (Office Practicum, 2016) Another issue that is related to the implementation of electronic health records is the training and education that comes with it. One solution to this issue is “EHR systems should be designed specifically for the physician’s workflow”(Green, 2018). By implementing a system that is specific to an area, and the subsequent training, could help to overcome barriers to the implementation of the electronic health records. The post acknowledges that although electronic health records (EHR) systems present advantages to medical facilities and personnel, their implementation is characterized by unique challenges. It notes that EHR offers advantages that include accessibility, reduction of waste, enhanced surveillance and monitoring of disease conditions, reduction in use of care, increased delivery of guidelines-based cares, and reduction of medication errors. In addition, it mentions that the challenges of implementing EHR include technical ability, cost, and training and education needs.Hyrkäsand Harvey (2010) supports this line of thought by explaining that although technological innovations can improve health care effectiveness and efficiency, integrating and diffusing technology into practice is a challenge, particularly with regards to how the technology is perceived, the characteristics of the technology adopters, and the managerial and contextual factors the define health care organizations and facilities. Borvman et al. (2016) similarly supports the sentiments expressed in the post by noting that EHR offers unique opportunities that include continuity of care, expedited patient evaluation, and seamless transitions between care providers.Electronic Health Records Essay Paper.  Cifuentes et al. (2015) mentions that despite offering advantages, they also present challenges that reduce their value. Three challenges are noted. The first challenge is difficulty in tracking information that may have been overlooked and not recorded. Although this is a common challenge for all information systems, it is of greater concern for EHR since it includes controls to prevent changes to the information thus making it difficult to add information that was overlooked while paper-based systems easily allow for changes. The second challenge is that health records typically use professional languages and terms that make it difficult for integrated care to proceed unless these terms are explained. The final challenge is that EHR incurs high costs from acquiring secure electronic devices for each individual (Cifuentes et al., 2015).
