Introduction
The nursing profession is characterized by different advanced registered nurses depending on the specialty of practice. The scope of practice is also changing due to dynamics and demands of the patient. The policies and legislations are also evolving with time and thus advanced registered nursing graduates entering the nursing practice require adequate academic and professional preparation to be able to keep up with the developments and shifts. Nurse educators play significant roles in the instruction, advice, teaching, training and general preparation of nurses for their roles and scope of practice. Professional nursing organizations also support nursing specialties and act as voices to nurses in their endeavor to expand their scope of practice and facilitate full engagement and integration in the healthcare system. This paper seeks to explore thenurse educator scope, essential professional organizations for these practitioners and the future controversies in their scope of practice.
Nurse Educator scope. Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper.
Nurse educators are advanced registered nurses who teach, advise, service, research, practice, and prepareregistered nurses and licensed practical nurses (LPN) for entry into their respective positions of practice (Raymond et al., 2018). My scope of future role as a nurse educator includes the procedures, actions and processes regarding regulation, certification and accreditation. Nurse educator roles are flexible and rewarding as the practitioner prepares health care providers for improvement of patient care and general health of the society.
Nurse educator practice requires academic qualifications from recognized institutions. They should hold a current, active nursing license as well as other advance practice credentials required by the state of practice. As such, my academic preparation will entail successfully pursuing a master’s degree and advance my knowledge through a doctorate as a preparation advantage to beating the competition in the job market as well as gain more insights on health. On the other hand, I will seek certification from the National League for Nursing’s Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) program(Patterson &Krouse, 2015). In order to qualify, I will ensure that I hold a RN active and current license from my state of practice, have completed my master’s degree and enroll for my doctorate as well as have engaged myself in full-time employment for at least two years. Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper.
The nursing regulations charged with the nurse educator practice include the boards of nursing of different states and the government. The regulations and rules as well as the standards provided are consistent with the Nurse Practice Act. I will therefore explore the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) website to gain knowledge on the requirements of the boards including safety, public health and examinations essential for licensing.
Professional nursing organizations
The nurse educator practice gets its resources from multiple organizations that are very influential to the scope of practice. These organizations include the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) which works to establish the education quality standards, oversee their implementation in institutions and enhance the healthcare through public support and professional research, nursing education and practice (AACN, 2019). Another organization is the National League for Nursingthatprovides membership for nurse educators, the health agencies, education agencies and the members of public as well.
Consequently, the National League for Nursing (NLN) national organization offers multiple resources including networking, faculty development, grants, assessment, public policy initiatives, and testing among other services (NLN, 2019). It provides membership for the leaders in nurse education and the faculty nurses. Thus, it gives nurses a chance to engage in healthcare reforms, government relations, development of policies and advocacy. In addition, the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) is also a relevant national body that promotes the advancement of education in nurses to their maximum professional potential (AODN, 2019). It seeks to improve health and wellbeing of the community by nurturing visionary leaders in nursing education. Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper.
Among the three organizations, I would join the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. This is because; it offers a voice to the academic nursing and also ensures quality standards of the nursing practice which promote effective nursing practice. AACN provides curriculum standards resources, health policy advocacy, research and data services, conference and webinars, leadership development opportunities, diversity and inclusion programs, accreditation, certification and other special programs essential for advanced nursing practice. These support the organization mission which focus on collective voice as the driver for excellence and innovation in practice, research and education and therefore, promote transformation and improvement of healthcare (AACN, 2019). The worldview integrates healthcare concepts that educate practitioners about their assumptions and beliefs and how they affect healthcare delivery.AACN resources allow the positive use of these concepts to improve patient care and particularly enhance cultural sensitivity in practice and nurse education. Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper.
Notably, the goal and mission of this organization fit in the worldview and philosophy of care in that they support the nurse educator beliefs and assumptions that may impact care delivery and encourage the development of favorable curriculum based on inclusive patientcare. As such, joining AACN will improve my practice through knowledge expansion via nursing research and development of leadership capacity to advance the nursing education practice. The membership will also benefit me with journals to advance knowledge regarding the changes in science and technology; provide an opportunity for networking both at the state and national level and certification for my commitment to excelling in my practice.
Controversial or evolving issue
The nursing educators in the contemporary society experience several controversies related to curriculum changes and technology advancements. This has challenged the imparting of knowledge to learners as the traditional classroom is being displaced by online nursing study (Cherry & Jacob, 2016).These changes are causing controversies related to the identification of the real student undertaking the online based program. This situation is expected to escalate in the future practice since the technology advancements are continuously taking place and will as well persist in the future. The technological change is expected to affect the curriculum in diverse ways. These include modifications to accommodate the changing health science and technology in relation to the use of equipment, data and services. These changes will also seek to develop new interventions that are evidence-based and match the new diseases and disasters associated with the changing society. Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper.
New technology will also demand advanced skills to operate healthcare machinery and therefore, the curriculum developers will be engaged in constant review of the program to ensure that the curriculum remains up to date and as well of quality standards matching the future healthcare environment. Other stakeholders influenced by this issue include the regulators, certification and accreditation organizations (Cooley & Gagne, 2016). These entities will also have to review their quality standards as well as requirements for the nursing educators to align them with the future changes in the healthcare industry. This will facilitate teaching of quality education from competent practitioners as well as improve the healthcare knowledge and research.
Consequently, the advanced registered nurses will be required to gain more technological knowledge and keep up with the changes in the curriculum in the future to ensure that they instruct the nursing students with the appropriate information and skills that match the market demands. For instance, critical education is necessary in the current and the future practice due to the increase in disasters, epidemics and acute illnesses as well as the increase of the geriatrics population (Booth et al., 2016). As such, nurse students should gain intense education regarding the critical nursing practice before graduation. The healthcare system should also be able to accommodate and provide professional growth to these nurses as they collaborate with all the stakeholders to better the future nursing education and practice. Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that nurse educators present a critical group of advanced registered nurse practitioners that initiate the advanced nursing practice process through training and preparation of nurses to undertake different roles in the healthcare setting. Nurse educators are regulated by both the state and national government organizations that control, monitor and oversee quality practice. prior to practicing, national and state licensing as well as certification and accreditation through different organizations is mandatory and occurs after academic qualification. Notably, various controversies threaten to affect the future of nurse educator practice including the technological dynamics that influences constant change in the nursing curriculum. This presents various changes also among the stakeholders and advanced registered nursed due to the need for new skills and knowledge as well as conducive environment to deal with the transformations.
