Background of Study

Clinical Problem

The study by Golshahi, et al., (2015) acknowledged hypertension as a public health issue which affected up to 25% of the adult population globally. The study used a prospective randomized control clinical trial that included 180 patients who were hypertensive. The recruitment of the participants was determined through convenience sampling. Data were analyzed through statistical analyses using SPSS. Comparisons were made using paired t=tests between the baseline and monthly mean values. Patients who consumed high salt in food frequently took vegetables and participated in physical activity took hypertensive medications more regularly. Education also helps to improve patient adherence to medication. Self-care management has persistently been suggested as a highly effective approach in the secondary management of hypertension and reducing cardiovascular risks among hypertensive patients.        Healthcare providers play a significant role in encouraging and training self-care behaviors with regards to dietary modification, physical activity, adherence to medication and the regulation of blood pressure. It should be understood that printed educational materials and text messaging are not favorable approaches for hypertension control and reducing cardiovascular risks. Therefore, self-care should be integrated into the routine clinics and even at homes through SMS. These approaches will increase the potential of the effectiveness of these interventions in attaining an effective blood pressure control and reducing the risk of cardiovascular events.
