Case Overview
The client in this case was a 17 year old female named Angela Cortez. She presented with complaints of lack of energy and general body malaise for the last two months. These symptoms were associated with weight gain and irritability. As a result, her performance in school has severely declined and neither could she actively participate in usual activities of daily life. In the last month, she used to cry on a regular basis. The Patient Health Questionnaire is an ideal screening tool that is easy to understand, brief, simple to score, readily available and with strong performance characteristics among adolescents. It is a self-administered tool used to assess clients for various disorders such as depression, eating disorders, substance use and mood disorders and anxiety common among adolescents in primary care settings (Johnson et al., 2012). It is preferred for use in this population due to the numerous risks that individuals within this population are predisposed to and the urgent need to have those mental health disorders adequately managed. In this case, the components of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) will provide a more specific approach to assess the client for depression (Johnson et al., 2012). Clinical interviews that were conducted also revealed similar occurrences of depression, substance use and mood disorders (Richardson et al., 2010). However, when compared to clinical interviews, PHQ-A was highly specific, sensitive and accurate in diagnostics.
