National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards (CLAS)

Introduction

The CLAS is a way of improving the kind of services provided to all people to help in achieving health quality and reduce health disparities among individuals (Payne, 2012). Additionally, CLAS is about responsiveness and respect to ensure that the individual health preference and needs are respected. Besides, the CLAS aims at eliminating health care disparities, improving healthcare quality and equity by providing a blueprint for healthcare organizations and individuals to implement linguistically appropriate services.National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards.

            We are using the National CLAS in our areas of nursing practice in various ways. We use CLAS to provide quality healthcare services to clients by establishing a good framework for hospitals to provide adequate healthcare services to diverse communities. Also, we use CLAS to ensure that students and teachers collaborate and support each other to solve different issues in a mutual dignity and respect manner. Additionally, I and my peers are using CLAS in our areas of nursing practice through developing trust with patients, empowering patients and promoting patient’s responsibilities (Payne, 2012). This is because, most of the time, we work with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Tus, we have to identify differences in patient’s desires, practices, beliefs, norms, and demographics to realize positive healthcare outcomes.National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards.

One nursing action that I may incorporate to improve competence in my organization is improving communication and language barrier (Payne, 2012). This is because the key way of accessing a culture is language. Hence, it is essential to find a translator or speak the patient’s language to reduce the language barrier and improve communication with my patients.
