NURS 6051 medule 5 Assignment. Topic: Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis.

Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis An understanding of the neurological and musculoskeletal systems is a critically important component of disease and disorder diagnosis and treatment. This importance is magnified by the impact that that these two systems can have on each other.NURS 6051 medule 5 Assignment. Topic: Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis.

A variety of factors and circumstances affecting the emergence and severity of issues in one system can also have a role in the performance of the other. Effective analysis often requires an understanding that goes beyond these systems and their mutual impact. For example, patient characteristics such as, racial and ethnic variables can play a role. Photo Credit: jijomathai – stock.adobe.com An understanding of the symptoms of alterations in neurological and musculoskeletal systems is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment. For APRNs this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans. In this Assignment, you examine a case study and analyze the symptoms presented. You identify the elements that may be factors in the diagnosis, and you explain the implications to patient health.NURS 6051 medule 5 Assignment. Topic: Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis. To prepare: By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to a specific case study scenario for this Case Study Assignment. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your assignment from your Instructor. Assignment (1- to 2-page case study analysis) In your Case Study Analysis related to the scenario provided, explain the following: Both the neurological and musculoskeletal pathophysiologic processes that would account for the patient presenting these symptoms. Any racial/ethnic variables that may impact physiological functioning. How these processes interact to affect the patient. Day 7 of Week 8 Submit your Case Study Analysis Assignment by Day 7 of Week 8. Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The sample paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available at https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/writingcenter/templates). Case Study Analysis

Introduction

The patient in the case study manifests symptoms of ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs when the blood vessels in the brain narrow or are blocked, leading to a significant reduction of blood flow in the brain (Chugh, 2019). Stroke is characterized by symptoms such as speech problems; paralysis/numbness or one side of the body; vision problems; headache; balance problems typified by trouble standing or walking; drooling face, among other symptoms (Macrae & Allan, 2018). The patient manifests some of the aforementioned symptoms.NURS 6051 medule 5 Assignment. Topic: Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis.

Neurological and Musculoskeletal Pathophysiologic Processes

The symptoms that the patient is manifesting are as a result of sudden disruption of the blood flow to a specific area within the brain. The sudden loss of blood circulation causes the corresponding loss of neurologic functions leading to symptoms like numbness, aphasia and slurred speech. When the brain cannot function properly because of sudden loss of blood flow within a specific brain region, the brain cannot receive the appropriate messages correctly(Macrae & Allan, 2018). For example, when the brain region that communicates with nerves responsible for speech is damaged, an individual may have speech problems as manifested in this patient.

On the other hand, stroke may affect different muscle groups. During a stroke, one side of the brain is affected and this may lead to paralysis. In addition, during stroke communication between the brain and the muscles of the body is affected and this leads to muscle weakness and paralysis(Macrae & Allan, 2018). Weak muscles cannot support the body as required and this leads to balance and movement problems as exhibited in this patient who has problems standing up.

Racial/Ethnic Variables that may Impact Physiological Functioning

Evidence indicates that Caucasians who have had a stroke have a faster rate when compared to Latinos and African-Americans within the US. Additionally, African-Americans who survive stroke have more significant physical impairments and reduced physical functioning. Factors likely to affect the physiological functioning lack of quality healthcare post-stroke and health literacy post-stroke can impact the physiological functioning of the patient (Ellis et al., 2014). For instance, some ethnicities such as minorities have poor access to vital healthcare services and this may affect their physiological functioning post-stroke.

How these Processes Interact to Affect the Patient

Race and ethnicity are risk factors for stroke. This is attributable to behaviors and determinants of health that may impact health outcomes. For example, accessibility to rehabilitation care after stroke is likely to result in better physiological functioning for a patient recovering from a stroke. Additionally, poor health habits may predispose a patient to risk factors for stroke and this after the recovery process. for instance, poor health literacy may adversely impact adherence to the treatment regimen and this affects the recovery process, and thus impacts the patient’s physiological functioning (Johnson et al., 2017).NURS 6051 medule 5 Assignment. Conclusion

In a stroke, the sudden disruption of the blood flow to a specific area within the brain leads to communication deficits to the body parts and this leads to impairment of the normal functioning. Racial and ethnic differences may impact the physiological functioning of the patient post-stroke. For example, the lack of quality healthcare post-stroke and health literacy post-stroke can impact the physiological functioning of the patient.

The module 5 assignment is due by day 7 of week 8. The case scenario is given below:

74-year-old male with a history of hypertension and smoking, is having dinner with his wife when he develops sudden onset of difficulty speaking, with drooling from the left side of his mouth, and weakness in his left hand. His wife asks him if he is all right and the patient denies any difficulty. His symptoms progress over the next 10 minutes until he cannot lift his arm and has trouble standing. The patient continues to deny any problems. The wife sits the man in a chair and calls 911. The EMS squad arrives within 5 minutes. Upon arrival in the ED, patient‘s blood pressure was 178/94, pulse 78 and regular, PaO2 97% on room air. Neuro exam – Cranial nerves- Mild left facial droop. Motor- Right arm and leg extremity with 5/5 strength. Left arm cannot resist gravity, left leg with mild drift. Sensation intact. Neglect- Mild neglect to left side of body. Language- Expressive and receptive language intact.NURS 6051 medule 5 Assignment. Topic: Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis.
