The ethical issue discussed in this chosen peer-reviewed article is that of patient privacy in a hospital setting. The study recognizes that privacy is a right of the hospital patient and that it fosters dignity and respect. It however finds that the respect for patient privacy in hospitals is currently not good, as from the patients’ perspective. Nurses and other healthcare professionals have a moral and ethical obligation to safeguard the hospital patient’s personal privacy and the privacy of his or her information.Nursing Research Study Fact Sheet Exercise. This is a prerequisite for patient satisfaction and the establishment of a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship based on trust. However, the study finds that there is currently no agreement as to the exact definition of respect for patient privacy in the hospital. The concept remains shrouded in misunderstanding with different authorities ascribing different meanings to the same in nursing and medical practice. Also, few existing studies are found to have looked at respect for patient privacy from the standpoint of the patient (Tehrani et al., 2018).
Several findings are unearthed by the study. It identifies four angles or attributes of patient privacy as being physical, psychological, informational, and social privacy. It also identifies seven themes that are tied to the prerequisites for privacy, including ethical/ legal backgrounds and informed consent. Lastly, two themes relating to the outcome of patient privacy in the hospital revealed by the study are (1) the protection and promotion of the dignity of the patient, and (2) establishment of a healthy patient-nurse therapeutic relationship (Tehrani et al., 2018).

State five key facts about which you want to inform persons who read your fact sheet (may use bullet points).
The key facts any person reading this fact sheet should know are that:
• Patient privacy in the hospital is a right not a privilege.
• Respecting the patient’s privacy is an ethical and moral obligation.
• There are federal legal provisions to enforce patient privacy in the form of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 or HIPAA (CDC, 218).Nursing Research Study Fact Sheet Exercise.
• Patient privacy is multifaceted in that it can be physical privacy, social privacy, informational privacy, or psychological privacy.
• The bioethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice all support the respect for patient privacy (Page, 2012).
Apply the five key facts of the ethical issue related to implications to nursing practice. Include theories, ethical principles, and themes found in the textbook.Nursing Research Study Fact Sheet Exercise.
The implications of the above five key facts to nursing practice are immense. First is that patient privacy is an ethical issue. Nurses, like all other healthcare professionals, are guided by a code of ethics. In the most part, these ethical principles that guide nursing and medical practice borrow from the ethical theory of Principlism (McCarthy, 2003). This is the theory by Beauchamp and Childress that advocates for autonomy of the patient (allowing them to make the decisions about their care), nonmaleficence (not causing them any intentional harm), beneficence (only doing them good), and justice (not discriminating against them in any way in the course of providing care). It can be seen clearly that respecting a patient’s psychological privacy translates to giving them autonomy, and the ethical principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence are breached when the patient’s privacy is not respected. Some of the themes uncovered include informed consent, protection of the patient’s dignity, and the establishment of a healthy nurse-patient relationship by respecting patient privacy.Nursing Research Study Fact Sheet Exercise.
What are the ethical considerations involved in performing the study?
The ethical considerations involved in performing the study include that approval for the research study was sought from the relevant authority, honesty was maintained in the selection of articles for review with bias was mitigated, and sources were acknowledged appropriately and authorship credited (Tehrani et al., 2018).Nursing Research Study Fact Sheet Exercise.
What were the results of the study?
The results of the study were that patient privacy has four facets namely physical, psychological, social, and informational. Also, seven themes are associated with prerequisites for respect to patient privacy. These include the presence of ethical and legal frameworks (like HIPAA), and the concept of informed consent. Lastly, two themes relate to the outcome of successful patient privacy. These are promotion of patient dignity and the creation of a good nurse-patient relationship (Tehrani et al., 2018).Nursing Research Study Fact Sheet Exercise.
Describe recommendations for next steps
The recommendations for next steps are that further studies on this subject should be done, especially focussing on patient privacy through the perceptions of the patients themselves. Also, a unifying universally-accepted definition of respect to patient privacy should be arrived at.
