Obesity: A Global Health Concern Essay.
Obesity is a continuing challenge for citizens and health care providers in the United States, as you likely know. Obesity can lead to numerous chronic health problems, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Childhood diabetes is also increasing at a disconcerting rate, which will lead to an increased health care burden within a few short years. Current estimates set the cost of obesity on the U.S. health care system at $147–$210 billion per year (The State of Obesity, 2016). Think about this week’s media as you take a moment to consider obesity as a burgeoning global challenge.Obesity: A Global Health Concern Essay.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Compare rates of obesity in the United States to other developed and also developing countries. Think about how health issues resulting from obesity compare as well.
• Reflect on health promotion and prevention strategies that nurses can implement.
• Contemplate the ethical, cultural, economic, political, and environmental issues a nurse should consider when developing a primary obesity health prevention strategy.
Post an obesity health promotion and prevention strategy a nurse could implement for a specific cultural group in the United States. Then, modify your message for use in one other country, being sensitive to the cultural nuances of the country you select. Describe why you chose to take the approach you did in your strategies and explain any challenges you anticipate a nurse may encounter when trying to implement these strategies.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.Obesity: A Global Health Concern Essay.

Adolescent Obesity: Nursing Health Promotion and Prevention Strategies
Obesity is one of America’s and the world’s biggest public health challenges in the 21st century. In the United States alone, obesity is responsible for major lifestyle conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Statistics are available for the general population as well as for particular segments of the population. Adolescents make one segment of the population that is greatly affected by yhe scourge of obesity. In the US alone, about three out of ten adolescents are either overweight or obese. This is comparable to the global figure of up to 25% of adolescents (Kornet‐van der Aa et al., 2017). This paper is about obesity health promotion and prevention by the nurse for this segment.Obesity: A Global Health Concern Essay.
Obesity being a complex pathological phenomenon requires a multi-pronged approach to prevention (CDC, 2019). Adolescents in the US require health education by the nurse centred on healthy living. This involves eating less junk food and taking routine exercise. This may even just involve walking or cycling to school instead of taking the school bus. At school, the nurse needs to educate the community through community efforts to impress upon the school authorities to encourage drinking of water instead of sugary beverages (CDC, 2019). The nurse also needs to engage the local authorities to provide recreational facilities for disadvantaged communities, and security in residential areas. This will motivate adolescents to exercise. All this is because obesity is inversely correlated with socio-economic status. Poor people have less purchasing power for healthy foods, have less education to understand risks of obesity, live in unsafe residential areas, and lack enough recreational space (Kornet‐van der Aa et al., 2017).Obesity: A Global Health Concern Essay.
This same message can be modified to suit a developing African country. In these countries, for instance, the slaughtering of chicken, goats, and other livestock is a regular and respected cultural activity. This is however a major source of red meat and cholesterol which encourage obesity. The nurse must therefore not only show that she respects these cultural practices, but also that she is not out to change the culture. The health education must therefore centre only on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and not on the cultural practices per se. This approach is chosen because it is the most effective (culturally competent and culturally sensitive). Challenges to the nurse include attachment to ritualistic lifestyle behavior like eating roasted goat meat.Obesity: A Global Health Concern Essay.
