Obtaining the Findings
Articles published in the year 2018, for the 2019 Society of Hospital Medicine national conference presentation of Top Articles in Pediatric Hospital Medicine were analyzed and reviewed. Six of the ten top articles were selected and used to propose the best practices basing on the quality of the research articles, and their validity and applicability to change practices. The findings from the articles were presented at the 2019 Society for Hospital Medicine annual meeting.Researching for Evidence.
The Best Practice
Thoughts on the Research Findings
The proposed best practices are very relevant in pediatric practice. For example, the clinical guidelines for bronchiolitis published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) require healthcare providers to avoid unnecessary tests such as x-rays on children because they have long-term effects on the pediatric population. Similarly, a UTI-calculator used to guide examination of UTIs in children presenting with fever and aged 2-24 months can lead to a decrease of needless testing and treatment in the febrile pediatric population (Courtney et al., 2019). Generally, the proposed recommendations aim to improve the quality of care and better care outcomes for the pediatric population.Researching for Evidence.
