Background of Study

The article by Chan et al. (2019) focused on the communication challenges nurses working in oncology wards face. According to the authors, the shortage of nurses puts more pressure on the oncology nurses facing, who are already burdened with busy oncology wards. The issue of the nursing shortage is very significant to the nursing practice because the nursing shortage is associated with poor patient care and care outcomes such as increased mortality rate, medication errors, high rate of infections, and increased length of hospital stay. The study setting was The Hospital Authority in Hong Kong: a hospital facing a major problem with the shortage of nurses in all settings. The purpose and objective of the study by Chan et al. (2019) were therefore to assess how oncology nurses in the target hospital perceived their communication with patients and how they handled the psychological needs of patients in the busy oncology ward. Method of Study

Chan et al (2019) used the qualitative interview study as the methodology to collect rich and detailed data regarding the experiences of the study participant and understand and have them explain their perspectives regarding in the busy oncology ward. Only eleven (11) study participants took part in this study. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to collect rich data about from the study participants on their perspectives and experiences in the busy ward. For data analysis, thematic analysis was used where the data was classified according to related themes. An online questionnaire that had fixed-choice and open-ended questions was used to collect data from the study participants (121).
