Week 9 discussion
The North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBoN) offers detailed scope of practice information for licensed nurse providers seeking to practice in the state. Having gone through the information, there are four areas that were initially obscure but have now been clarified. Firstly, the information clarifies that although nursing personnel are expected to practice under the supervision of a physician licensed by NCBoN, they can practice to the full extent of their education if the physician is compliant with the laws regulating supervised practice, and has clarified what the nurse is expected to do through clear instructions. Secondly, a nurse may initiate a physician’s standing delegation orders or standing medical orders through selecting specific functions and tasks. However, through initiating standing orders, the nurse assumes responsibility for his or her actions in accordance with the relevant practice rules. That is to say that a nurse can engage in independent medical judgment, but would be accountable for the judgment to assure that associated actions (North Carolina Board of Nursing, 2019). However, any nurse that administers medication must either be skilled on the administration or have immediate availability of a supervising medical personnel who is skilled in the administration to monitor the process and act to provide remedial action if necessary. This is tracked through approval number on written prescriptions. Finally, scope of practice is limited by the license and cannot be expanded beyond the license. To expand the scope of practice, the nurse must obtain the corresponding license and this is only possible through formal education with informal education and on the job training not considered when increasing the license level (North Carolina Board of Nursing, 2019).State Boards of Nursing, Advanced Practice Licensure.
