Discussion: Successful Implementation of Electronic Health Information Technology Since the inception of the HITECH Act, health organizations have faced increased pressure to update their health information technology (HIT) resources. As discussed last week, many believe that the increased use of electronic health records and the quick and efficient communication afforded by HIT can lead to improved quality of patient care. Yet there are significant costs associated with implementing such systems. Irrespective of the setting, the primary responsibility of nursing personnel is to offer a safe medical care to both patients and their families. While this is the ideal, their efforts are influenced by inclusion of supportive technologies. However, the technologies that health care providers can afford do not always meet the standards that nursing personnel believe are adequate to provide the best possible medical care (McGonigle&Mastrian, 2018). In fact, there is a concern that resources are allocated towards medical technology adoption without due consideration for nurses’ input without consideration of the fact that nursing personnel have a direct effect of medical care outcomes, and have a justifiable opinion on use of medical technology (Hsiao, Chang & Chen, 2011). Nursing involvement in the planning phase of the technology development is important, especially when they are involved in designing new systems since this improves the chances of a successful implementation. Though being involved at this stage, the nursing personnel can present their concerns and listen. This is an important step since facilitates the determination of the technology requirements that encompasses the medication, clinical and technology requirements from the nurses’ perspective (Swab &Ciotti, 2010; Grain &Schaper, 2013). An example of this can be seen in Bar Code Medication Administration, a technology that set the minimum requirement as including equipment to allow the bar code to be matched to the medication and particular patient as well as the nursing personnel administering the medication for accountability. This was a requirement that was brought into attention by nursing personnel involved in the technology planning, who noted that identifying the medication administering nurse is important since it allows for their contact information to be included as well as schedules and availability. Nurses’ involvement in the implementation phase is also important. That is because implementing new technology would require that the current practices be changed, particularly when they concern care administration. In fact, nursing personnel are well positioned to offer feedback on how the technology is performing as well as some of the practice changes necessary to improve the technology’s performance both during the trials and actual implementation. At this point, nurses optimize the plan-do-study-act cycle to support rapid changes to the technology and environment, engaging themselves in identifying, defining and resolving implementation issues. This means that failing to involve nurses in the implementation phase could result in repeated problems with the technology (Grain &Schaper, 20133; Boswell, 2011). An example of this can be seen in Bar Code Medication Administration, where failing to involve nursing personnel resulted in workarounds by the other medical personnel. Nurses’ involvement addressed this issue by using their capacity to systematically investigate the technology challenges, allowing the developers to make the necessary adjustments (Davis &Schaper, 2013).
