The Influence of Multiple Technological Tools on Nursing Education: Net Generarion, Neo-Millenials, AACN Essentials, and the Tiger Initiative

Technology has been advancing at an exponential pace over the last two decades. With this, traditional teaching methods are fast being rendered obsolete. This is largely attributable to the fact that the generation that is in colleges and universities was mostly born during this era of technological revolution. In this, nursing education has not been left behind and faces the same challenges of inevitable need for change in teaching strategy.             The pedagogical use of 3-D animation and interactive or smart whiteboards in the nursing classroom is increasingly becoming popular (Pandey & Abdussalam, 2016; Videonations, 2019). To enhance the learning and evaluation of nursing students, faculty staff using interactive whiteboards can effectively deliver more content in many forms at one sitting (audio, video, graphics, pdf files, and so on). Files are easily shared as the board is centrally controlled by a computer. Considering the Net generation (born in the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s) and the neo-millenials (born in the late 90s), they would view these two technological tools very favorably. This is because the former are visual and love multitasking among other things. The latter have a great online presence and like sharing information (online). Therefore, these two tools will be supporting their characteristics better compared to traditional teaching tools like the plain whiteboard or blackboard (Mastrian et al., 2011).

Additional teaching strategies that can be used to ensure these two generations learn effectively using technology include allowing them to multitask in class (texting on their phones, sending DMs or direct messages on their social media pages to their classmates, and interacting with the instructor), moving rapidly through content (they have a short attention span), giving collaborative assignments (neo-millenials like sharing just like on social media) (Promethean, n.d.), and using multimedia and visual enhancers like graphics, videos, and audio files.

These two technological tools will help achieve two particular Essentials as per the American Association of Colleges of Nursing or AACN (AACN, 2008). These are Information management and application of patient care technology (IV) especially on the advocacy for technologies aiding in safe care, and Interprofessional communication and collaboration for improving patient health outcomes (VI) especially on “communication and collaborative skills” (p. 22).

The TIGER initiative came out of a summit in 2006 and sought a roadmap to integrating technology in nursing education for better patient outcomes.
