As a child growing up, I was always fascinated by the concept of caring and the intangible nature of psychiatric care. I particularly remember growing up in an extended family of Asian origins where topics on psychiatric issues were a taboo and any family member receiving such care would be described as being on holiday. I can recall one instance when as a teenager I was informed that my grandmother was on holiday and would be missing the family gathering. I found this explanation illogical. It was only later as an adult when exploring my family’s health history that I discovered my grandmother’s depression and how she would require inpatient psychiatric care in the later years of her life. Since then, I have worked to raise awareness about mental health and encouraged public debate, ranging from accepting that psychiatric issues occur to the need for accepting treatment without stigmatizing the issue. I have continued these campaigns throughout my career as a psychiatric registered nurse. My experiences with mental health have given me a keen interest in psychiatric nursing, and I hope to be able to specialize as a knowledgeable, competent and skilled psychiatric nurse practitioner that can engage in a caring relationship with patients and family members as I offer treatment and support.Treatment of Psychiatric Emergencies in Children Versus Adults.
I am determined to pursue a career as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Through enrolling in this Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program, I will receive specialized training that will improve my capacity to provide psychiatric care even as I make a difference in the field. I hope to acquire a more in-depth awareness of the mechanisms underlying psychiatry as well as how to complement psychotherapy with pharmacotherapy in care provision. In addition, I anticipate having the opportunity to gain hands-on experience for my future interactions with patients.
