Virtual care/telehealth has several benefits particularly related to the collaboration and coordination of care. The two fundamental forms of technologies utilized in telehealth are store and forward and real-time videoconferencing technologies. According to Rutledge et al (2017), videoconferencing permits providers and patients at different locations to see and talk with each other in real time utilizing cameras, software and computer networks. The use of videoconferencing allows two or more individuals to connect for care and consultation, patient education and patient management and monitoring across the world. Store and forward technologies allow patient physiologic and diagnostic data to be remotely shared across different sites for them to be evaluated and interpreted (Rutledge et al, 2017). Advanced registered nurses have the role of initiating timely and appropriate utilization of telehealth services to make sure that patients receive the care they require. Although telehealth technologies improve collaboration and coordination of care, providers still encounter several drawbacks when they try to incorporate telehealth into their practice. Regulations and laws that govern the practice of providers together with health insurance reimbursement regulations for telehealth widely differ across states and often impede the utilization of telehealth in particular practice settings. Some states require nurse practitioners to have collaboration agreements with physicians. Supervision of nurses by the collaborating physician can be accomplished through telehealth but not in states where nurses are required to collaborate with physicians. Therefore, it is very important that providers be knowledgeable about the regulations that influence their practice (Rutledge et al, 2017).  Patient privacy and information confidentially are another drawback to the integration of telehealth into practice. Providers are required to adhere to the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and ensure patient privacy.
