Step 1: Research Analysis
Topic of Interest: Geriatric Falls
Research Article: Chiu, M. H., Lee, H. D., Hwang, H. F., Wang, S. C., & Lin, M. R. (2015). Medication use and fall‐risk assessment for falls in an acute care hospital. Geriatrics & gerontology international, 15(7), 856-863.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/ggi.12359
Professional Practice Use:
• The Theory of human caring by Watson Jean is used in this article. It is evident in the nurse’s role in keeping the patients in the best position for self-recovery.
• Theory of self-care by Orem Dorothea is applied when the hospitalized patients are nursed by the nurses to help them become independent.
• The nursing theory concepts used include person, health, environment, and nursing.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.

Strengths of the Research Limitations of the Research Relevancy to Topic of Interest Notes
• Use of a large sample with generalizable information
Comparability of the data is limited by the environment of research and thus hospitalized patients and community dwelling elderly people cannot be influenced by similar factors. The article provides evidence-based insights on geriatric falls in the hospital settings. This informs the researcher on the occurrences of the geriatric unit. Generalization allows translation of research to the larger geriatrics population.
• Random selection of samples provides authentic results Validation is limited by lack of sufficient evidence-based research. Randomization is important for generalization and validation of the results concerning elderly falls. Further research to validate the negative effect of beta‐blocker use on falls is required.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.
Qualitative nature Time consuming The qualitative nature of the research helps derive evidence from specific samples Qualitative data from the research allows objectivity in collection of statistics essential in examining geriatric falls

The article above is relevant in the contemporary nursing society. This is because it provides an evidence based research significant in the geriatric population health which has reported a notable increase over the last decade. I would therefore recommend its use in the professional practice since it explores the rates of the falls in the hospital and their relationships with the use of medication used for management of falls and other conditions. Thus it will help practitioners in relating and controlling the prescription of polypharmacy, diuretics, narcotics, and tricyclic antidepressants (Chiu et al., 2015).Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
Peer reviewed research materials undergo editing, fact-checking and provision of feedback to the author regarding their text. My approach involves the consultation of the Wiley online library database and looking up for the article using the keywords. This is followed by looking for the peer review denotation on the article or the editorial statements regarding the article. I also look at the reference list, the author credentials and their academic affiliations as well as an abstract. These features are present in peer reviewed articles and hence help in the identification of research.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.
The Ulrichs Global Serials Directory provides ease of identification of peer reviewed articles. The database calls these articles “refereed” and also expresses their difference with other articles for clarity purposes (Meeks, 2018). In my future research, I intend to use this database due to its simplicity, convenience and effectiveness particularly in nursing evidence-based research. It is a standard library directory with serial publications, newspapers, scientific research and wide range of information essential for research in diverse fields. The search involves typing the journal title or keywords in the search box and clicking the search icon which is followed by clicking the referred icon that leads to the preferable research.

Week 5 | Part 5: Professional Development
I have developed a curriculum vitae to capture my academic and professional accomplishments to date. I have also developed a statement identifying one or more professional development goals, and a statement proposing how I might align one or more of these professional development goals with the University’s emphasis on social change.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.

The results of my efforts are below.
Step 1: Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Step 2: Professional Development Goals
1. Develop interpersonal skills. This will enhance my communication and collaborative skills essential for managing a large number of geriatric populations. Interpersonal skills are behaviors and tactics used for effective interaction.
2. Improve technology skills to match the continuous changes. Medical technology is constantly changing and hence, I will continue advancing my skills to keep up with the new technological trends.
3. Provide excellent evidence-based nursing care centered on the patient. I will engage in research in order to familiarize with evidence based interventions for patients.
4. Focus on continuing education to meet the current patient demands. This will entail professional and academic advancement to increase knowledge and experience.
5. Become an expert in nursing care. I will learn multitasking to help me keep up with the fast-paced nursing setting.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.
Step 3: Alignment with Social Change
In order to align with the social changes, I will develop my communication, collaboration and interaction skills as part of improving my interpersonal skills. This will enable me to interact effectively with the patients and fellow staff members as well as the patient’s family members. My focus on continuing education will also promote my interactions with people as well as gain knowledge on socialization and how to handle changes related to the social aspect of nursing care.
Week 6 | Part 6: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.
The results of my efforts are below.

Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
This section is comparing a nurse educator and a gerontological nurse practitioner. Nurse educators teach, prepare, advice and instruct registered nurses and licensed practical nurses for nursing practice. On the other hand, gerontological nurses provides healthcare to the geriatric population. Their services include medicine prescription, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. The demand of geriatrics is higher than that of nurse educators and their average salary too.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty
Gerontological nursing is the care given to the elderly adults (Pierre & Conley, 2017). This specialty presents an increased demand due to the increase in terminal illnesses affecting mostly the elderly. Falls are also common among the old adults and as well, their population is increasing rapidly in the contemporary society. As such, geriatric nursing practice specialty is a worth venture for me.Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis Essay.

Step 3: Professional Organizations
• National Association for Professional Gerontologists
It is an authoritative organization for the credentialing of gerontology personnel (Best Value Schools, 2019).
• Gerontological Society of America (GSA)
It offers multiple services and resources to geriatric nurses.
• American Assisted Living Nurses Association (AALNA)
It promotes safe, dignified and effective nursing practice through representation of licensed and registered nurses.
