Assignment 1: Assessing Clients With Addictive Disorders
Addictive disorders can be particularly challenging for clients. Not only do these disorders typically interfere with a client’s ability to function in daily life, but they also often manifest as negative and sometimes criminal behaviors. Sometime clients with addictive disorders also suffer from other mental health issues, creating even greater struggles for them to overcome. In your role, you have the opportunity to help clients address their addictions and improve outcomes for both the clients and their families. For this Assignment, as you examine the Levy Family video in this week’s Learning Resources, consider how you might assess and treat clients presenting with addiction.Week 6: Psychotherapy for Addictive Disorders.

What is Mr. Levy’s perception of the problem?
What is Mrs. Levy’s perception of the problem?
What can be some of the implications of the problem on the family as a whole?
After watching Episode 2, describe:
What did you think of Mr. Levy’s social worker’s ideas?
What were your thoughts of her supervisor’s questions about her suggested therapies and his advice to Mr. Levy’s supervisor?
After watching Episode 3, discuss the following:
What were your thoughts about the way Mr. Levy’s therapist responded to what Mr. Levy had to say?
What were your impressions of how the therapist worked with Mr. Levy? What did you think about the therapy session as a whole?
Informed by your knowledge of pathophysiology, explain the physiology of deep breathing (a common technique that we use in helping clients to manage anxiety). Explain how changing breathing mechanics can alter blood chemistry.Week 6: Psychotherapy for Addictive Disorders.
Describe the therapeutic approach his therapist selected. Would you use exposure therapy with Mr. Levy? Why or why not? What evidence exists to support the use of exposure therapy (or the therapeutic approach you would consider if you disagree with exposure therapy)?

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control, at least 2 million people have an opioid use disorder (Rudd et al., 2016). This number is expected to increase by the year 2030 irrespective of the policies implemented to address it. Follow-up data from studies involving people receiving treatment for OUD reveals significantly high rates of premature deaths either as a result of over dosage or abuse. This means that, even if access to treatment is made available and efficient, mortality rates will continue to increase with decreased quality of life. Most communities in the United States continue to be impacted by drug overdose related deaths such that, more than 702,000 people have died between the year 1999-2016 (Rudd et al., 2016). In the year 2016, drug overdoses were the leading cause of injury related deaths in the US with an estimated 70,000 deaths that occurred. 70% of these deaths involved either illicit or prescribed opioids (Rudd et al., 2016). In order to contain the current opioid epidemic and prevent its harmful effects, coordinated and sustained efforts by different players are needed.Week 6: Psychotherapy for Addictive Disorders.
This epidemiological data demands coordinated and sustained efforts in implementing and establishing policies that are scientifically grounded to influence changes in health practice. As suggested by Rudd et al. (2016), this can easily be achieved through reshaping prescribing practices to reduce the incidences and mortalities related to prescription opioid-induced OUD. Such policies may include but not limited to: supply restriction through regulation of the product types approved for use, influencing practices in prescribing either by educating providers or providing guidelines for prescribing, reducing demand through patient education on opioids and ensuring access to OUD treatment. Harm reduction to prevent opioid overdose by providing naloxone and implementation of needle exchange programs for injecting drug users are other changes in heath practice.Week 6: Psychotherapy for Addictive Disorders.
