Discussion: Professional Nursing and State-Level Regulations Boards of Nursing (BONs) exist in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Virgin Islands. Similar entities may also exist for different regions. The mission of BONs is the protection of the public through the regulation of nursing practice. BONs put into practice state/region regulations for nurses that, among other things, lay out the requirements for licensure and define the scope of nursing practice in that state/region. APRN State Law and regulations

The scope of advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is termed by the nurse practice act that is headed by the Board of Nursing. Some regulations are common to all nurses across the Globe while others are specific to the state of practice. The prescriptive authorities in the states are essential in improving public access to healthcare, strengthening public health response to disasters and improving the efficiency of service (Chattopadhyay, Zangaro & White, 2015). In Georgia, APRNs have their document verified by the Board of Nursing at least once a year. Those documents include Practice license and other credentials that have information about their practice within the state. The nurses must also have written guidelines for practice on accord to nursing protocols. The guidelines ensure consistency, provide directions and dictate the APRNs public health practice to align with the protocols. The state also has a law that requires the nurses to participate in guidance for peer review. The review for these nurses is conducted by another APRN or a physician yearly. The essence of the review is to assess appropriate client management by use of tools like direct observation during practice, evaluation of their documentation and clinical records review from other practitioners. An APRN practicing in Georgia is also expected to generate patient s records of the clients they serve that include prescriptions for controlled substances and 100% information of any adverse effect that has occurred during practice (Shilling & Hodnicki, 2015). The records are then reviewed by the delegating physician at least annually. The nurses must also engage in consultation with the delegating physician or designated physician during their practice. North Carolina has ARPNs guidelines and regulations that are almost similar to those of Georgia. For instance, an APRN practicing in North Carolina has the authority to prescribe drugs and order the administration of medications. However, the prescription authority of the nurses in this state has included in collaborative practice agreement and for the controlled substances they are recurred to have a DEA number (Harkey, Little & Lazear, 2017). The other similarity of the APRN regulations between the two states is the annual renewal of credentials required in practice. Both states require APRN nurses to participate in continuing education (CE) programs to maintain nurse practitioner approval. The essence of CE among the practitioners is to ensure constant refreshment of their knowledge on healthcare as well as being aware of the trending issues as well as advancing technology with regards to health. However, the minimum time of CE required for practitioners in each state is different. In North Carolina, an APRN must have at least 50 hours of CE each year for approval while in Georgia the minimum is 30hours. Both the sates give to allow the APRNs to register for inactive status when the nurse will like to pose their practice for some time due to different reasons. Moreover, the sates have various requirements for the nurses who want to apply to change from the inactive status. In North Carolina, when an APRN stays inactive for 2years they have to do a refresher cause for approval while in Georgia time limit for the same is 500 hours.
