Clark (2015) suggests that to curb workplace incivility, healthcare workers should learn to speak up the very moment that incivility happens. This, she states, is the most effective way of battling this menace. She also advises that in conjunction with speaking up, all staff should treat their colleagues and students with dignity and respect. The evidence-based strategies that she puts forward are (1) reflecting, probing, and committing (asking oneself questions before reacting to an uncivil situation), (2) Creating a safe zone (making sure that when confronted with an uncivil colleague, the surroundings are safe to pre-empt an escalation), and (3) Using the DESC model to structure a civil conversation (Clark, 2015). Application of the Concepts Presented to Improve the Workplace Environment
The concepts presented in the articles above relate to the assessment that was done on my organization in that the organization scored just 75. This means that my workplace environment is only mildly healthy and there is a lot of room for improvement. As such, these concepts are needed to help my organization improve. The organization could therefore apply these theories by allowing free communication (like a nurse feeling safe to report uncivil behavior immediately it occurs without fearing that nothing will be done), incorporating the DESC model during training and education for conflict resolution, making a code of conduct and clear policy guidelines governing workplace behavior, and incorporating cognitive rehearsal in ongoing staff training.
